September is slowly coming to an end as we all readjust to the new academic year! Our student community is keeping the energy up - check what they have been up to ✨
Modekwartier is a creative district close to the center of Arnhem. This is the home of many art galleries, art shops and workshops in Arnhem. Also, some cafés and restaurants can be found in this area, too. Even there is a unique fashion hotel. This is the place to meet designers and creative entrepreneurs. You can walk into the shops which caught your eye and start talking to the owner. Usually there is an interesting story behind every design, regardless if it is a lamp or a piece of clothing. If you are an art student, you will be inspired by walking into any of the shops and workshops. But of course, you do not have to be an artist or art student to enjoy the area. This is an opportunity for everyone to treat themselves by exploring an especial part of the city and find products which cannot be found in the chain stores. I sometimes have difficulties in setting my own boundaries. I always want to say 'yes' to people asking for my attention or when people want me to do certain projects or help them with things. I just find it very difficult to let people down - or at least that is how I feel I would make them feel when I say 'no' for a change. Because it is not evident that everytime I say 'no', people will feel let down. That is only my own perspective. Mostly people just say 'okay' and move on. While I stay behind and feel guilty for saying no. This is really something that I started dealing with the last few years. I noticed that I got overwhelmed and stressed because I wanted to do everything and help everyone. So at the end of the week I would sit down and be totally stressed and didn't have any energy to enjoy my weekend - which was often also full of things I needed to do for others. So I made a pact with myself that I would stop saying 'yes' to everything that was asked of me, and I would start with being kinder to myself and saying ' yes' to my own needs - like just relaxing in the weekend instead of helping someone move, baking a pie and doing some extra work that I promised would be done on Monday. I know that this 'problem' is something a lot of people and students deal with. So in this Moment of Inspiration I give you some tips to help you set your limits, that help you to see and recognize your boundaries and that will make you able to deal with them. So do you recognize this from your own life? How do you deal with it?
It is possible that you have already seen all the red flags hanging outside of houses and other buildings in Arnhem. You may have wondered why they are there and what they mean. With the flags and all the activities that will be happening in Arnhem the coming days, we remember the ‘Battle of Arnhem' that happened during the second world war in 1944. From the website ‘bridge to liberation’: “Operation Market Garden” at Arnhem was the largest operation on Dutch territory during the Second World War. From 17 to 25 September 1944, a joint Allied invasion tried to ensure that a number of important Dutch bridges would be taken. However, during the Battle of Arnhem, the Rhine Bridge turned out to be “a bridge too far”. It became a disaster that played a key role in the further course of the war. Since 1945, in Arnhem, the month of September has been dedicated to the commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem. Arnhem is known throughout the world for the Battle of Arnhem and the Bridge Too Far. Unfortunately the number of veterans is slowly decreasing and the memory ebbing away. That is why it is now time to commemorate the Battle of Arnhem in an innovative and dignified manner. In an experience with art, film and music. Bridge to Liberation makes the stories around the Battle of Arnhem come alive for everyone through an ‘Experience’. This event lays a foundation for the commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem in the future.” Coming Friday (September 18th) there will be an online program, which you can follow on TV Gelderland or online on bridgetoliberation.nl. For more information on the battle of Arnhem, I’ll reccommend you to go to bridgetoliberation.nl. If you select the ‘english’ flag at the top right of your screen, you can read about all that happened during those days in and around Arnhem. The flags are placed on houses and buildings to show that we didn’t forget what happened. The overall theme is every year: Les’t we forget!
Did you miss hiking on the hills? Klarenbeek is a park for you. It gives you an opportunity to get away from flat streets of the city and enjoy walking among the tall trees. Once you reached the top, you will be rewarded with some of the best viewpoints in Arnhem. Klarenbeek park is the first city park of Arnhem. This area has been witnessed a lot of changes through out the history. From a monastery to a viewpoint for tourists. There are still a few signs of past years in the park. One of the building that you will notice is the old water tank of the city which is turned to a luxurious restaurant today. But, even before this restaurant was built, Arnhem citizens used to come here to relax and enjoy the views. You can lock your bicycle near one of the entrances and start your walk. Our recommendation of the week is a movie called Seven Pounds. It is a somewhat older movie (2008), but it is not less interesting than it was 12 years ago. This movie shows a man that has lost his meaning to live and the way he thinks he can make up for the things he (accidentally) did. It is a story about guilt and about paying of that debt in a way you have never seen before. It is a movie that makes us think and consider the things we think are important in life. Most movies have a happy ending, this one has a different one. We recommend this movie because it makes you think. It makes you consider good and bad, it focuses on the question: can we decide who deserves health, safety and happiness and who doesn't? It also reflects on the things life does to us and the way we deal with it. This is a hard story, it is not a happy one and it is not an easy watch, but it is a story that stays with you and that makes it worth your time. Seven pounds can be found on netflix. As a lot of you may already know that we are organizing a buddy project in which we connect first year students with older students and employees of the universities. We believe that human beings are social beings. We all need some social contact in our lives. The amount of contact we are having with others may vary - maybe because of the amount of time you have, the energy you want to spend on social stuff, or on your own character - but that doesn’t mean we do not need any social interaction. We all agree that eating healthy, reducing stress and getting in the open air are things that help us stay healthy. Social connections can also help us stay healthy. Physically and mentally. There are studies that suggest that our social connectedness helps us feel satisfied and happy in our lives. With social connectedness we mean the feeling of belonging and closeness, either to groups of people or to specific persons. With the buddy project we try to create a place where we can socially connect you with other people. It is not just about being a buddy or getting help from someone - it is about connecting with someone who you didn’t know before. It is about getting to know someone and maybe getting in touch with someone who you wouldn’t have known otherwise. Interested?
